Whickham.mobi switches to a desktop Website...

Whickham.mobi started life as a mobile web service designed specifically for mobile phones and other mobile devices. In our first 12 months since October 2009, we noted considerable success, achieving 130,352 individual page visits. However, it was also obvious that the vast majority of site visitors were accessing the site via a laptop or PC (over 97%) rather than a mobile phone. The initial site design would often span the entire screen on these monitors and was less friendly to the majority of visitors, making features such as the news and restaurant menus more difficult to read.

We hope the new site is easier to use now and it should also allow us to add more content such as images, maps and video.

But isn't the ".MOBI" domain extension used for mobile web sites?

In short, yes it is. But, having started life as a mobile website, we made the decision to stick with the site name as many NE16 residents are already familiar with Whickham.mobi and recognise our website as a reliable source for local information. Changing the site name now would create confusion. Furthermore, as over 97% of you already access the site from a desktop PC, the changeover to our new desktop site should be seamless. For those visitors who accessed our website from a mobile phone, you can still access news, events, weather and features on our mobile website by visiting whickham.mobi/mobile
