The Sage Gateshead
About The Sage
The Sage Gateshead is both a live music venue and a centre for music education.
Hear it Live - the local, national and international concert programme runs all year round and incorporates all kinds of music ranging from acoustic, indie, country, world, folk, jazz, electronic and dance to classical music, including concerts by Northern Sinfonia - orchestra of The Sage Gateshead.
There are concerts at different times of day - in the evening, late at night, mornings, and at lunch time. The Sage Gateshead also offers extremely comprehensive learning, education and participation programmes, which invite individuals of all ages, Schools, Young Musicians, Training and Higher Education providers, communities and businesses - all to get involved.
Whether you're 2 or 92, beginner or maestro, whether you'd like to join a choir, play in a folk ensemble, brush up on your theory, try out improvisation or learn a new instrument; whether you want to pursue music professionally or as a creative social pastime - you're sure to find an opportunity to join in, enjoy and learn at The Sage Gateshead.
The Sage Gateshead - A Landmark Building
Now a prominent landmark on Tyneside, The Sage Gateshead is sited adjacent to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the Tyne Bridge and includes two auditoria with outstanding acoustics, a rehearsal space and a 25-room Music Education Centre - each conceived as a separate enclosure. The windswept nature of the site led the architects (Foster & Partners) to create a welcoming covered concourse along the waterfront to link the various spaces. As a result the entire complex is sheltered beneath a broad, enveloping stainless steel roof that is 'shrink-wrapped' around the buildings beneath. This extends over the Concourse, which acts as a foyer for the auditoria and hospitality areas for performers, audiences and students alike, offering unique views out across the Tyne. The Sage Gateshead took ten years of detailed planning and was designed after extensive consultation with musicians, audiences and music presenters and promoters.

Northern Sinfonia
Covering a full range of Western classical music from early baroque, through the classical and romantic periods, to specially commissioned new work, Northern Sinfonia is one of Europe's most exciting orchestras. From its home at The Sage Gateshead it continues to perform across the North of England and fly the region's flag throughout the United Kingdom and overseas including some of the major concert halls of Europe: The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, The Philharmonie in Berlin and the Musikverein in Vienna.
Northern Sinfonia is proud to work with its Music Director, Thomas Zehetmair, Principal Conductors and distinguished visiting musicians including Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Franz Bruggen, Imogen Cooper, Thierry Fischer, Lesley Garrett, Evelyn Glennie, Heinz Holliger, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Heinrich Schiff. Projects away from the classical mainstream have included working with the Pet Shop Boys at a shipyard in North East England, and a concert with Sting performing brand new orchestrations of his hits.
"I used to watch the Northern Sinfonia as a kid at City Hall. I can't believe I'm standing up here in front of them singing, it's beyond fantasy." (Sting)
Recordings and broadcasts form an integral part of the orchestra's work, with several CDs having been recorded in the world-class acoustics of Hall One - to great critical acclaim.
