Whickham Hermitage House
The Hermitage House, Front Street, belongs to Gateshead Council. A few years ago Social Services re-housed all residents locally leaving the house empty. The council put the property up for sale in October 2009.
A group of serious minded people got together to enter a bid for the property. This bid hoped to take advantage of what is called an
Asset Transfer - a system by which a Council could lease a building to a community group with a sound business plan which would support and sustain the building.
The group has passed its first test with Gateshead Council and is now preparing a business plan.
