Rotary Club of Whickham Clavering
Rotary is an organisation whose members are drawn from all walks of life world-wide. Ours aims include:
- To help voluntary local organisations, particularly the younger folk and those who may be elderly or infirm.
- To broaden our understanding of local issues and "how things work"
- To act in liaison with a variety of community-based groups to help improve the quality of life for those in Whickham and the surrounding districts.
- And lastly, but crucially, to enjoy the company of our old and new Club members as we aim to do those things mentioned above!
History of Rotary
Rotary, the world's first and most international service club, was founded by a lawyer named Paul P. Harris.
Working as a newspaper reporter, a business teacher, a stock company actor, a cowboy, and having travelled extensively throughout the United States and Europe selling marble and granite, Paul Harris went to Chicago in 1896 to practice law. One evening, he visited the home of a professional friend. After dinner, whilst strolling through the neighborhood, Paul's friend introduced him to a number of local tradesmen in their stores. It was here that Paul conceived the idea of a club that would recapture some of the friendly spirit amongst businessmen throughout small communities.
Why "Rotary"?
In the early days of the first Rotary Club in Chicago, the name
Rotary was chosen to reflect the custom of rotating the site of club meetings among the members' places of business. This rotation, an integral part of the founder's original concept, was designed to acquaint members with one another's vocations and to promote business, but the club's rapid growth soon made the custom impractical.
Today, Rotary has over 1 million members world-wide and is active in over 160 countries.
